Oklahoma Gin Rummy Glossary & Terms
The truth is that most of the terms that are used in Oklahoma Gin are common with those used in most rummy games. Below you will find an Oklahoma gin rummy glossary that contains the most common terms that you are going to meet. These are the terms that are often heard while playing and the ones that you really need to know at all times.
• Advertising – The process of discarding cards in order to make the opponent discard cards that have the same suit or rank. This term is also known as chumming, fishing or baiting.
• Angling – Highly similar to advertising but you are discarding cards in order to induce the opponent to
discard card that is a rank away. The term used might sometimes be “side baiting” or “sideways fishing”.
• Blitz (Shutout) – When you win the game and the opponent does not score.
• Block – The process of withholding one card so that the opponent is not able to extend a particular meld.
• Catch – Usually used as verb meaning getting one hand or card.
• Combination – A combination is made out of 2 cards that can turn into a meld if we add a suitable 3rd card.
• Deadwood – Cards unmatched in a player’s hand.
• Gin Hand – Hand made out of only melds plus one card that is to be discarded. This will end the game and score a special bonus.
• Knock – This also ends the game but only happens when knocking conditions are met and the bonus is smaller as when going down with a Gin Hand.
• Safe Card (or Safe Discard) – A card that can be safely discarded as there are few chances that the opponent needs it.
• Undercut – When you have the same or less deadwood than the player that knocks. This brings in an undercut bonus.
• Unload – Discarding high cards in order to reduce point count.
